BiographiesGregory MillerComposer/lyricist Greg Miller works in genres ranging from classical to musical theater to rock, pop and jazz. Greg has written choral pieces, chamber works, musical theater shows, soundtrack scores, and over 150 rock, pop and jazz songs. A husband and proud father of two girls, Greg's gotten into the habit of memorializing happy, transcendent or even tragic family events in commemorative songs inspired by such milestones as the arrivals of his children, birthdays of family members, weddings of siblings and in-laws and the passing away of loved ones. After collecting these many compositions into two family song cycles, appropriately named Family Album and Family Album II, it occurred to him that other people might also have the will but not the ability to provide such musical testimonials to their own loved ones. This led naturally to the birth of “Portraits In Music.”
Background and ExperienceGreg’s formal studies began with piano lessons at the age of five. In his teens, while studying piano and orchestration at Chautauqua Institution, he also started playing in rock bands. He then studied composition at Ithaca College School of Music with Pulitzer Prize winner Karel Husa, piano with Mary Ann Covert and jazz arranging with Steve Brown. His professional career has found him playing in numerous rock bands at practically every New York rock club, while completing choral works for performance by various choirs and composing the music and lyrics for a number of musicals, including “Emergency Entertainment”, “The Forever Thing”, “The Pain Chain” and “Ourselves Alone”. He has also written the soundtrack music for the upcoming documentary films “Death from Above” and “The History of Fashion.” Regardless of resumes and bios, however, the proof of any composer’s or lyricist’s abilities lies in the finished product.
